What is Pepcid?
Pepcid (generic name: Famotidine) is an H2 blocker used to treat a variety of medical conditions. In fact, Pepcid is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines. Plus, it treats other issues like gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medication works by lowering stomach acid levels. Further, Pepcid relieves patients of symptoms like persistent coughing, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and stomach pain. Finally, patients can take Famotidine without a prescription. How is Pepcid used?
In general, you should take Pepcid as directed by your doctor, whether that is with or without food and once or twice daily. For those taking it once a day, it is usually taken right before bed.
The amount and length of time that patients take Pepcid is determined based on their medical condition. Usually, childrenโs dosages are based on body weight. Make sure to take this medication as directed by your doctor to get the most benefit. Take it at the same time every day, and do not stop taking it without permission from your doctor. You may take this drug with other drugs as recommended by your doctor.
For those taking Pepcid to self-treat heartburn or acid indigestion, take 1 tablet with a full glass of water as needed. For heartburn prevention, take 1 tablet with a full glass of water 15-60 minutes before eating. Take no more than 2 tablets every 24 hours for no more than 14 days in a row without talking to your doctor.

What are the side effects of Pepcid?
Most medications have side effects. Pepcid is no different. If any of these symptoms continue or get worse, contact your doctor:
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Constipation
Although rare, Pepcid may cause severe side effects. Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects:
- Signs of infection (persistent sore throat, chills, fever)
- Mental/changes in mood (depression, confusion, hallucinations, restlessness)
- Easy bleeding/bruising
Further, these severe side effects require immediate medical attention:
- Severe dizziness
- Seizure
- Fainting
- Irregular/fast/slow heartbeat
Finally, allergic reactions are rare but still possible. Seek immediate medical care if you have the following side effects:
- Itching/swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
- Trouble breathing
- Rash
- Severe dizziness
