Around Vida-Flo Wilmington
The Neighborhood
Vida-Flo Wilmington is in Lumina Commons on Eastwood Road, just west of the bridge to Wrightsville Beach. Beach days, boat days and long summer weekends on the Cape Fear coast all run through this stretch of road, and we are the last easy stop before the sand or the first one on the way home.
Lumina Commons takes its name from one of the great landmarks of the Carolina coast. The Lumina pavilion opened on Wrightsville Beach on June 3, 1905, built by Hugh MacRae’s power company to fill its beach trolley and show off electric light. Lit inside and out with electric bulbs, it was called the “Fun Spot of the South,” hosted big bands for decades, and by one local writer’s account is where the shag was born in 1928. It came down in 1973, and a state historical marker now stands near the spot.
Nearby Airlie Gardens has been growing since 1901, Wrightsville Beach was one of the first surf towns on the East Coast, and downtown Wilmington’s Riverwalk and the Battleship North Carolina are a short drive west. This is also a sports and film town: UNCW Seahawks basketball, Wilmington Sharks summer baseball, the high school gyms where Michael Jordan grew up playing, and the studios that earned Wilmington the nickname “Hollywood East.”
Getting here: In Lumina Commons on Eastwood Road, just before the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge.
