Dehydration has two main forms: acute and chronic, each defined by duration and severity. Both types affect the body differently and require specific treatment approaches.

Acute Dehydration

Acute dehydration is a rapid and severe loss of fluids, often due to vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, or fever. It is common in cases of the stomach flu and food poisoning. If not addressed promptly, this type of dehydration can disrupt your body’s normal functions and lead to serious health risks. Symptoms include intense thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, and, in extreme cases, dizziness or even shock.

Chronic Dehydration

Unlike acute dehydration, chronic dehydration develops slowly over time due to not drinking enough fluids regularly. It may not be as immediate or obvious, but it's just as harmful to your long-term health. Signs of chronic dehydration can include:

Dry skin
Headaches
Constipation
Constant fatigue

If not addressed, chronic dehydration can lead to severe health problems like kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

Risk Factors Of Chronic Dehydration

Identifying the underlying causes of your dehydration is the first step in rehydration treatment. Chronic dehydration can result from various medical conditions, dietary habits, and daily activities that affect the body's fluid balance. These factors impact how well the body retains and uses water.

Below are some common causes of chronic dehydration:

Two of the most debilitating symptoms of Celiac are vomiting and chronic diarrhea. Typically, fluids and electrolytes are replaced with water and food, but those who suffer from chronic vomiting and diarrhea cannot replace them quickly enough, leading to chronic dehydration.

People with gluten intolerance commonly experience diarrhea or constipation, which can cause loss of electrolytes, dehydration, and fatigue. When those losses outpace what you can drink and keep down, replacing fluid and electrolytes intravenously is the established way to correct the deficit.

If you have not already, always check the side effects associated with your prescription. Many medications are diuretics, which can increase urination or cause diarrhea and vomiting, all of which increase your risk for dehydration. Allergy and blood pressure medications are two common examples.

Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that influence the hydration level in your body. During PMS, the levels of these hormones fluctuate and can cause monthly dehydration.

Why do hangovers happen? Alcohol is a diuretic, and drinking it disrupts the regulation of fluid balance in the body, leading to frequent urination and rapid fluid loss. Dehydration is one part of a hangover, alongside disrupted sleep, inflammation, and the by-products of alcohol metabolism. It is the part IV fluids replace.

Anxiety and prolonged stress change how much people drink and eat across a day, and they tend to push up caffeine and alcohol intake, both of which increase fluid loss. Sustained stress also raises cortisol, which has a direct effect on how the body handles sodium and water. The result is a fluid deficit that builds quietly rather than one you notice as thirst.

These GI conditions, ranging from mild to severe, come with symptoms like nausea and chronic diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can result in decreased intestinal motility and slower passage of stool through the digestive tract, leading to constipation. Chronic constipation can cause discomfort, bloating, and difficulty with bowel movements.

Dehydration disrupts the body’s balance of electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, and chloride). Electrolytes are essential for maintaining proper fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contraction. Imbalances in electrolyte levels can lead to symptoms such as weakness, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, and confusion.

Chronic dehydration can affect concentration and mental clarity. In a controlled trial of healthy young men, a fluid loss of roughly 1.5 percent of body mass was enough to impair vigilance and working memory and to increase tension and fatigue (Ganio et al., British Journal of Nutrition, 2011). Those effects track the fluid deficit, and they lift when it is corrected.

Inadequate hydration can leave skin dry and flaky, and dry skin is harder to keep comfortable if you already live with a condition such as eczema. A dry, compromised skin barrier is also easier to irritate. Hydration supports the skin barrier, it does not treat a skin condition.

Dehydration reduces the body’s ability to regulate temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially during hot weather or intense physical activity

Vida-Flo has been doing IV hydration since 2012 and has delivered over 1,000,000 treatments across ten clinics in Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Every treatment is given by a Registered Nurse working under the supervision and protocols of our licensed physician medical directors. IV fluids correct the deficit. They do not treat what is causing it, so your nurse will assess whether hydration therapy is appropriate for you before any treatment begins, and will tell you if something needs a doctor instead. IV therapy works by using an intravenous (IV) fluid drip to deliver saline solution through a small catheter and tubing directly into the bloodstream. This saline solution may also include medications and vitamin supplements tailored to the individual patient.

During your therapy session, a medical professional will insert an IV line attached to a bag of saline solution. This bag is hung above the patient's head, using gravity to regulate the flow of fluids into the bloodstream. Compared to a syringe or other forced technique, gravity allows for a gradual introduction of fluids.

While the time frame of a single treatment varies from person to person, a session typically lasts 30 – 45 minutes. There are exceptions to this timeframe, such as with our NAD IV treatments, which generally take 1 to 2 hours per session.
